Water is Life.
• Water seeks the horizon. Water is in motion, flowing, reconnecting with other waters it encounters on its way.
• Water bears memory. We can trace African memory across the ocean, to the fountains, across the city, and back to the bay. The body itself is a vessel of water bearing memory that is passed through the generations at the Samba or at the Jongo.
• We come from the water, whether you venerate Iemanjá or listen to ‘the scientists’ who tell us we crawled out of the primordial soup. The water is the source and the beginning of the food-chain.
• And we return to the water. Kalunga. The great repository of all death; it’s where we are going. Water is both the destination and the source.
