So here we can see the 1850 borders of the ethnic groups who lived in the region which is now the west coast of Angola. We have Kongo, Mbundu and Ovimbundu groups here. The main ports are Loango, Cabinda, Ambiz, Luanda, and Benguela. And we can see the Kongo River along here, inside the marked territory. We’re looking at ethnic groups who were neighbors – they knew about each other. We want to be careful here because language groups are colonial designations and we don’t want to flatten or homogenize. Distinctions are important, but we have some leeway to generalize here. This is not an Igbo meeting a Zulu for the first time! So now, let’s take a strong shift and try to see what all this might have looked like from their perspective.
