Here you can see St. Antonio and this configuration is important – a church, a cemetery, and a fountain. This is how the city was built. A church, a cemetery and a fountain would cause people to come and circulate, thus leading to roads, streets, economic activity, businesses and housing. Rio was built like ancient Rome – each construction of a church, a cemetery and a fountain would lead to the expansion of urbanization.
I learned very quickly that identifying the location of public fountains in colonial Rio de Janeiro would be key to the project. Today: we can see the church, it’s still there, but no sign of the cemetery remains, and the fountain has been replaced by a clock tower.
OK – so with St Antonio is our point of orientation…
