Dona Ivone Lara (1921-2018)

This mosaic portrait honors Dona Ivone Lara, one of Rio de Janeiro's most beloved Samba singer/composers who released 19 albums between 1970 and 2004.

The plaque below the mosaic is the only remaining signage that marks the patrimony of the Salt Stone. It reads: "In this location, the salt was offloaded from the ships that docked in the nearby port. Later, it became the meeting point of the Samba musicians who worked as stevedores." Notice that there is no mention of slavery.
